The Heatstrings Award

The UMDF Heartstrings Award recognizes a child or teen that has donated or raised funds for the UMDF, enabling the UMDF to continue its mission. The winner is chosen based on related criteria of age, time invested, talents demonstrated, effectiveness, and generosity and how the individual has “tugged at the heartstrings.”

We are proud to present the 2026 Heartstrings Award to Hugh McKinney for the meaningful contributions he has made to the mitochondrial disease community in honor of his late brother, Henry, who passed away from a mitochondrial disease. Hugh’s efforts reflect a deep personal connection to the mission and an unwavering dedication to creating impact in his brother’s memory.

Hugh played a vital role in the success of the UMDF Energy for Life Walk – Northwest Arkansas, helping to raise more than $23,000 to support UMDF and the mitochondrial disease community. Beyond the walk itself, Hugh’s initiative and leadership were evident in every effort he undertook. He helped distribute over 3,000 flyers across seven schools in a single day, helping inspire district-wide participation in a Wear Orange Day. He also became the event’s top individual fundraiser, raising $1,350 on his own, and played an essential role in securing more than $10,000 in corporate sponsorships.

More than his measurable achievements, Hugh’s sincerity, energy, and joyful spirit have left a lasting impression on everyone he has encountered. He did not simply support UMDF’s mission – he embodied it, inspiring others to get involved and give generously.

For his compassion, leadership, and selfless dedication, Hugh McKinney is a truly deserving recipient of the Heartstrings Award.
